Music and Arts

An Overview

First United Methodist Church is recognized throughout the central Kentucky area for its outstanding music and arts ministry.  Among United Methodist churches First UMC is recognized statewide for its leadership in the Kentucky Annual Conference.  Roy Nance is beginning his 29th year as minister of music at this church.  Programs such as the August Chautauqua series, Christmas Madrigal Dinner and Yuletide Festival, and summer Musical Arts Downtown have sought to broaden the scope and musical offerings of our church.  These programs have attracted participation and attendance from a large area.

A comprehensive program of music is presented by our church.  In addition to the vocal choirs for 4 year olds through 94 year olds, the church offers hand bell choirs, a sacred dance group, instrumental ensembles, choral speaking, Orff ensemble and drama groups.

The primary focus of music in our church is to enhance the three worship services.   A variety of choral music from all periods of music, is offered on the pipe organ, piano, harpsichord, orchestral instruments, hand bells, or contemporary ensemble.  Energetic, creative hymn singing is a part of the traditional worship services and is lead by the excellent Chancel Choir.  Newer, more contemporary music is shared in the Good News at Nine service by the Praise Team and instrumentalists.

Dedicated members and a talented staff make all of these music opportunities possible.
